Sword Combat

Master the blade

Beginner Updated Jan 6, 2025

Overview

Tale of Crowns features a completely original, custom-made combat system. It's simple to learn, but difficult to master. The system is fast-paced and features combos, stamina management, blocking, and parrying — complete with spatial audio, visual effects, and accurate hit registration.

Currently the game supports one-handed swords and bows, with future support planned for 2-handed weapons, spears, and crossbows.

Controls

Input Action
Left Click Swing
Right Click / Q Block

Sword Tiers

Different swords deal different base damage. Higher tier swords also have better combo scaling.

Sword Base Damage Hit 1 Hit 2 Hit 3
Copper Sword 15 15 (1.0x) 15 (1.05x) 16 (1.1x)
Iron Sword 18 18 (1.0x) 18 (1.05x) 19 (1.1x)
Mythril Sword 20 20 (1.0x) 22 (1.1x) 23 (1.15x)
Dragonglass Sword 25 25 (1.0x) 28 (1.15x) 30 (1.2x)

3-Hit Combo System

Consecutive left clicks perform a swing combo. There is a combo window of 1 second before the combo resets. Landing all three hits deals increasing damage with better scaling on higher-tier weapons.

Example: Iron Sword

18
Hit 1 (1.0x)
18
Hit 2 (1.05x)
19
Hit 3 (1.1x)

Full Combo Damage (Iron): 18 + 18 + 19 = 55 damage

Stamina & Cooldowns

Stamina Costs

  • Per Swing -4 stamina
  • Full 3-Hit Combo -12 stamina

Cooldowns

  • First Swing 0.50s
  • Between Hits 0.14s
  • Combo Reset Window 1.0s

Blocking & Defense

If you have sufficient stamina, you can block sword swings and arrows, completely negating physical damage. Blocking with a shield costs less stamina.

How to Block

  1. 1 Equip your sword
  2. 2 Hold Right Click or Q
  3. 3 Face toward your enemy
  4. 4 Your sword will block incoming attacks

Directional Blocking

You can only block attacks coming from the direction your character is facing, with a ~37° allowance to the left and right of your screen center. Enemies who position to your side or behind can bypass your block.

You cannot block attacks from behind or the sides!

Tip: Equipping a shield halves your stamina cost when blocking hits. If your stamina reaches zero while blocking, your block will break!

Perfect Parry

Timing your block correctly and predicting your opponent can help you easily win fights. A successful parry produces a distinct sound and spark particle effect.

How to Parry
